US Listening Station in Berlin

The Teufelsberg represents the second biggest mountain inside Berlin/Germany. It consists of rubble from the Second World War and extends about 80 m out of the plain around. It is named after a lake, which is located very nearby: the Teufelssee.
After 1970 finally, the Teufelsberg was formed into a nature and free time area. Skiing and mountainbiking for example were enabled. Today, also during the summer, people use the winds on the top of the mountain to fly kites.
Since the late 1950s during the Cold War a listening station was built close to the Teufelsberg, which still exists as a ruin.
While this ruin is in order partly to renature and partly to continue corroding and going to pieces, artists discovered that hidden and unusual place to perform their different kinds of arts. Especially Graffiti-artists created the ruins a colourful new face.
Different arthropodes, mammals and birds, coming from the surrounding forest, colonized habitats inside and around these ruins.
Fortunately guided tours, art events and film shootings enable interested people legally to enjoy this fascinating, but also dangerous place.

Grunewald–Urban Forest

The Grunewald (engl. “green Forest”) is a huge forest area in Berlin/ Germany. It has about 3000 Hektars and covers two districts of Berlin partly, namely Steglitz-Zehlendorf and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.
A west border is formed by the Havel, a river in the north-east of Germany.
The Grunewald additionally is interrupted by a chain of smaller lakes, representing remnants of the last glacial period.
One of these lakes is visible in this film: the Teufelssee. It represents a nature reserve area and offers habitats for several rare aquatic and terrestrial organisms.
Impressions of the littoral zone of this lake and of the more heavily vegetated forest around are presented. Furthermore a wetland area, being located inside an old gravel pit field nearby the Teufelssee, was visited. Typical animals of these habitats such as the grass snake (Natrix natrix), butterflies and dragonflies were observed during these shootings.
The Grunewald as an urban forest contains a remarkable biodiversity of animals and plants.
